2 Reminders: Practice Schedule & Clothing Order Forms

First, do not forget that this year’s clothing order forms are due no later than tomorrow! So, if you haven’t handed in or emailed us your completed form, get it done now.

Second, just a quick reminder to all parents and wrestlers — when the school is closed we can’t have practice. This means there will be no practices for any age groups over the winter break. However, all of us coaches strongly suggest that wrestlers take initiative and continue to work out and practice on their own…

Middle School Challenge #1 — Saturday 12/22

This Saturday will be the first SJWL Middle School Challenge. The tournament is for wrestlers in grades 6th, 7th, & 8th only.

It will be held at Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Township.

Check-in time is 12:00PM.
Wrestling will start at 1:00PM.

A few important notes:

  • The goal is for every wrestler to get a minimum of 3 matches.
  • Wrestlers will not be separated by age. This means a 6th grader could possibly be matched up against an 8th grader.
  • The tournament director will attempt to separate boys and girls when possible, but this entirely depends on the number of boys and girls who attend this event.

We need to know ASAP if your wrestler cannot attend. This will be a huge event with middle schoolers from the entire league, so advanced notice is essential to ensure things run smoothly.

A few notes & a reminder…

Parents, a few things… Remember the middle school is having a match against Haddon Heights at 4:30pm. We’ll also be handing out equipment and singlets after school as well.

In case you didn’t see it earlier, here’s a message from Coach Chad:

Tell your kids to keep their heads up after the wrestle offs. Everyone will get their chance for matches whether it’s duals or JV. It’s all a learning experience. This is no doubt the deepest and toughest duals team we’ve had since I’ve been here and there were a lot of 1st and 2nd year wrestlers that showed us some good things these last 2 days. Keep getting better and before you know it you’ll be there too.

One final note — there were a handful of wrestlers (ahem) who did not turn in singlets, compression shirts, and/or headgear at the end of last season. If your child still has equipment from last year, please get it back to us ASAP. Thanks!

Required Survey for Middle School Wrestlers

Parents, if your wrestler is in middle school, please have him/her visit the link below and complete the brief questionnaire. One of our biggest benefactors, Beat the Streets, has asked that our wrestlers answer these questions for statistical purposes and to determine where they fall on the “Grit Scale.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the Grit Scale, here’s how it was described in an article last summer on Curiosity.com:

In every classroom, there are the “naturals” for whom the subject comes easily, who seem to barely study and breeze by on their inborn ability. Then there are the “grinders”: the people who study for hours, ask most of the questions, and fight tooth-and-nail to get a good grade. Those people are high in what researcher and MacArthur Genius Grant winner Angela Duckworth calls grit. It’s this quality that experts say is an essential predictor of success.

The questions are easy and it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. If you or your wrestler have any questions about this, don’t hesitate to let us know.
